A flash chrome finish is built in two stages. The component is first cleaned and prepared, then a polished (bright) nickel undercoat is deposited to give the surface its smoothness, brilliance, and corrosion barrier. A final, very thin “flash” of chromium — measured in tenths of a micron — is applied over the nickel. The chrome layer provides the characteristic cool, blue-white colour and tarnish resistance, while the quality of the nickel beneath determines how bright the finished part looks.
“Flash chrome” is used in two ways in the surface-finishing industry. Some suppliers also use the term for a thin layer of functional hard chrome applied to industrial parts for light wear resistance. These are different processes with different properties.
