Hairline buffing and polishing in Singapore — satin hairline finished metal surfaces by Active Treatment Pte Ltd

Directional hairline brushing and mechanical polishing from fine satin to high-gloss mirror finishes.

Hairline buffing encompasses two distinct finishing operations: directional hairline brushing (which creates the characteristic linear grain pattern popular in architectural and consumer product design) and mechanical buffing/polishing (which progressively removes surface metal to achieve mirror-bright finishes).

Active Treatment's skilled technicians use belts, wheels, and compounds to produce consistent, high-quality finishes on aluminium, stainless steel, brass, and other metals. We match samples for production consistency and work to customer-approved visual standards.

Common applications include: stainless steel kitchen equipment, aluminium consumer electronics enclosures, brass architectural hardware, and decorative structural components.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a hairline finish and a mirror polish?

A hairline (No. 4) finish has a fine, unidirectional brush pattern with Ra 0.2–0.8 µm, widely used for kitchen equipment and architectural panels. A mirror (No. 8) polish is an extremely bright, reflective finish with Ra <0.05 µm, used for decorative and high-precision optical components.

Can you match a hairline finish to my existing parts?

Yes. Please provide sample parts or a visual specification (Ra value, photograph, or standard reference). We can create test samples for approval before committing to production runs.

Will buffing change the dimensions of my parts?

Buffing removes metal. For mirror polishing starting from a machined surface, expect 20–100 µm total metal removal. For hairline brushing, removal is typically <20 µm. Close-tolerance surfaces should be protected or over-sized accordingly.

Can hairline finish be applied after plating or anodizing?

No — hairline buffing is a pre-plate or pre-anodize operation. Final polished parts go through cleaning and plating/anodizing after buffing. Attempting to buff an anodized surface will break through the oxide layer.

How long does mechanical polishing take?

Processing time depends heavily on the starting surface condition and target finish. Achieving a mirror polish from a machined surface may require 3–5 progressive polishing stages. Lead times range from 2–7 working days depending on quantity and complexity.
